Tidbits about the CSI
staff:
Stuart
Birnbaum, Ph.D.
Stuart is CSI's president and co-founder along with Les and
Alan. He is also an associate professor of geology at the
University of Texas at San Antonio. Stuart's research
interests are in sedimentology and geomicrobiology. He has
been involved in teacher training and education at the
middle and high school level for the past
decade. He is also involved with Boy
Scouting and Boy Scout adult leadership training. Stuart
believes that all students can be successful. "We must
challenge students with compelling questions and provide
them with guidance to find the answers." All that and
red tennies too!
Leslie
Kanat, Ph.D.
Les is a CSI vice-president and co-founder. He is also an
associate professor of geology at Johnson State College in
Vermont. Leslie's research interests include metamorphic
petrology and structural geology. Les coordinates the
development of the activities included within GETIT. He not
only writes the code for some activities, but also assembles
the activities into the user-friendly form that you see on
our CD's. The commute from Vermont to Texas can be a bit
tiring though!
Alan
Morris. Ph.D.
Alan is a vice-president and co-founder of CSI . He is also
an associate professor of geology at the University of Texas
at San Antonio. Alan's research interests include structural
geology and the development of 3-D computer programs that
analyze and interpret the complex structure of the Earth's
crust. Alan is instrumental in the creation and writing of
much of the computer code behind GETIT. We like him even if
he is a Brit.
Paul
Bertetti
Paul is the business and general manager at CSI. He has a
degree in geology and has done research in geomicrobiology
and chemistry of water-rock interactions. Paul coordinates
most of the day to day activities for CSI. Essentially, his
job is to worry about things and when they will get done. If
you have any questions about CSI or GETIT, feel free to give
him a call. He might not know any answers, but he'll be
happy to talk to you.
Carlos
Chavez
Carlos is the senior programmer at CSI and is also known as
the "ghost" to many of our 1st review teachers. He has a
degree in computer information systems from the University
of Texas at El Paso. Carlos assembles the majority of the
program components that Les and Alan provide, operates the
company computer network, and manages to put up with a
multitude of bosses!
Ellen
Lyon, Ph.D.
Ellen is CSI's science education specialist. She specializes
in school science pedagogy, curriculum design, and
instructional strategies. She completed her Ph.D. in science
education at the University of Texas at Austin. Ellen taught
high school and middle school science for seven years prior
to beginning her graduate studies. Her research interests
include the effects of computer-assisted instruction, the
impact of grouping strategies on student achievement, and
identifying the life-extending properties of chocolate.
